On Aug. 17, the Financial Times ran an ad by an international environmental coalition (#WRONGCALLONCOAL) targeting Samsung C&T Corporation. The ad called for Samsung to pull out of its involvement with the Vung Ang II Thermal Power Joint Stock Company (VAPCO)’s coal power plant. According to the ad, if the power plant is completed, it will expel an annual 6.6 million tons of greenhouse gases, amounting to around 200 million tons over a period of 30 years. On Aug. 19, a group of youth environmental activists held a press conference in front of the Samsung Group’s headquarters in Seoul’s Seocho neighborhood calling for Samsung to “make the right decision” regarding coal power plants.
