Members of Greenpeace Korea and over 100 local residents gathered on the shores of Busan’s Haeundae Beach to protest illegal fishing in the form of sand art. After carving an image of a whale into the sand, they spelt out the message, “Stop illegal fishing. Protect the oceans.” On Sept. 19, the US designated South Korea as a country that partakes in illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing as a response to two South Korean fishing boats failing to comply with Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) regulations while operating near Antarctica in 2017. Failure to comply with regulations in the future could result in South Korean boats being banned from US docks and US export controls on South Korean seafood products.
