The Korean Society of Victoria Australia erected its own comfort woman memorial statue, making it the 10th of such statues to be erected outside South Korea. An unveiling ceremony for the statue was held in front of Korean Society of Victoria Australia in Melbourne on Nov. 14. Funds for building the statue were procured by donations organized by the society’s committee in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, while a committee in Melbourne funded the statue’s erection. Present as the ceremony was Jan Ruff O'Herne, a Dutch-Australian human rights activist who has spoken out about her experiences of sexual slavery under the imperial Japanese military.
