The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning North Korea’s “the long-standing and ongoing systematic, widespread and gross violations of human rights” on Dec. 18. North Korean Ambassador to UN responded to the resolution, which was adopted without a vote by saying it has “nothing to do with the genuine promotion and protection of human rights, as it is an impure product of political plots by hostile forces that seek to tarnish the dignity and image of the DPRK and overthrow our social system.” The resolution, the 15th of such resolutions since 2005, is non-binding, but still carries political clout. South Korea and Japan did not sponsor the resolution.
