A triumph of human spirit

Kang Myung-ji, 18, and Lee Ba-da, 16, who both suffer from down syndrome, learn jive dance, a style of ballroom dancing conceived by African-Americans in the early 1930s, at a dance studio in Incheon. They’ve been learning since January and Kang and Lee took longer than usual to learn, but now have almost mastered the craft. Their partnership was made possible by instructor and professional dancer Jeon Ki-mo, who believed that with time they would be able to learn. Kang’s mother Kwon Eun-soon said that dance is a great sport for building pride after expending effort to learn. Lee’s mother Kim Hyo-jung said Lee’s overall care and awareness has improved since he started learning dance. The pair will participate in the 8th annual national dance competition for sufferers of autism along with nine other pairs on Oct. 26. (by Kim Jeong-hyo, staff photographer)
